Tritt Elementary students go to Hightower Trail Middle School for day after small fire, smoke issue with HVAC

One adult who'd been in the building in the early morning was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The school day was "disrupted due to smoke" from an HVAC issue at Tritt Elementary School, according to the Cobb County School District, and students will complete the day at Hightower Trail Middle School.

The district said later in the morning said regular school operations would resume on Thursday.

"Parents will receive information on updated dismissal plans," the district statement said.

The school in East Cobb is located off Post Oak Tritt Road. Hightower Trail Middle is on the same road about a mile away.

Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services provided more details on the smoke situation, saying in a statement that one person was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation and no firefighters were injured.

Crews went to the school just after 7 a.m., the fire service said, after a fire alarm went off. While crews were on their way, someone called 911 and reported smoke and fire visible in the school hallway.

"The caller also reported that everyone had been evacuated from the building," the statement said. "The caller then stated that an adult that was previously in the building had inhaled some of the smoke."

When crews arrived, they found what was described as a "small fire" coming from a wall AC unit at the front of the building and put that fire out.

"The fire was small in nature and considered to be in the incipient stage upon crew arrival," Cobb Fire & Emergency Services said.
