2 killed in Georgia in possible tornado as storms from Hurricane Helene hit

Wheeler County was under a tornado watch earlier in the night, as Hurricane Helene approaches the coast of Florida.

WHEELER COUNTY, Ga. — Two people are dead after a suspected tornado overturned a mobile home in Wheeler County, according to Wheeler County Coroner Ted Mercer.

Mercer is on the scene right now on Adams Cemetery Road, a rural location east of Scotland and south of Glenwood. Mercer said the pair were killed when the mobile home overturned.

Wheeler County EMA director Steve Adams says the two people were found in a field on Adams Cemetery Road, about 100 yards from where their mobile home was.

He says they suspect children were also in the vehicle, though they were safely located elsewhere.

Adams says the winds are knocking down trees and blocking roads in Wheeler County.

"It's ugly, ugly weather," he said.
