UGA student sexually assaulted during ride near campus, police say

The reported assault happened off campus during the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 23.

ATHENS, Ga. — An active investigation is underway after police say a University of Georgia student was sexually assaulted over the weekend. 

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the reported assault involving the student happened off-campus during the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 23.

Police said the victim met a male suspect and another person in the downtown district and went with them back to the North Campus parking deck around 3:20 a.m. According to an alert to students from the University, the victim was then driven from the deck, and it was during that ride that the reported assault happened. 

The school's notice said, at one point, the victim was seen being carried on the back of one of the suspects before entering the car and being driven away. 

The suspects were described as two Latino males, according to the alert from the University. One of the suspects was last seen wearing a black button-up Columbia shirt and khaki shorts. The second was wearing blue jeans, boots, a black jacket with a hood and a white shirt. 

At this time, police said the situation is under investigation, and authorities are asking for anyone with information to contact detectives at 762-400-7308 or 762-400-7068. Anonymous calls can be made to the Crime Stoppers tip line at 706-705-4775.

Meanwhile, police are urging anyone who may have been victimized by sexual assault or child abuse to call The Cottage Crisis Hotline at 706-353-1912.
