1 dead in Union City house fire, authorities say

Here is what we know.

UNION CITY, Ga. — One person is dead after a fire broke out at a Union City home.

Union City Fire Department crews were called to the home along Fairburn Avenue Thursday evening, not far from C.H. Gullat Elementary. Firefighters said there was one person in the home when they arrived.

A family member, who claimed the man who passed is his uncle, told 11Alive on the scene that the man was disabled and needed a wheelchair to get around. So when the home caught fire, he was unable to go anywhere.

The family member adds that a woman, who he said also lives in the home, lit incense, and left, before the home caught fire.

Authorities are now investigating what sparked the deadly fire. No firefighters were hurt, Battalion Chief Dennis Moore said.

"The gentleman was found in his room, I believe," he said. "We were able to get him out but he passed away on the scene."
