UNION CITY, Ga. -- Kennis Harrell, an EMT and former DeKalb County Fire-Rescue captain, is dead after causing a wrong-way crash early Monday morning on South Fulton Parkway that killed two others, according to Union City Police.
Cpt. Gloria Hodgson said Harrell crashed his Lexus head-on into a Camaro with two people inside -- killing Michael Fullwood, 55, and Kathy Stevens, 56.
Police said Harrell turned onto South Fulton Parkway from Highway 92 into the oncoming lanes around 2 a.m. Monday, crashing into the Camaro after driving over a mile in the wrong direction.
Officials told 11Alive that Harrell worked as a DeKalb County firefighter for more than a decade, reaching the rank of captain.
He retired in the past year or two, according to a DeKalb Fire-Rescue spokesperson.
Harrell decided to work as an EMT with AMR to "still help people," said one firefighter who went through the fire academy with Harrell 16 years ago.
He said Harrell was a "very well-liked guy," and "everyone is still trying to grasp this, none of it is sinking in."
Union City Police investigators have not released the cause of the crash, or whether speed or alcohol was a factor.
