CEDARTOWN, Ga. — Dramatic videos and images show parts of a northwest Georgia town completely flooded.

Heavy downpours fell across the northern half of the state, sending rushing waters flooding into Cedartown. The city in Polk County is about 70 miles west and north of Atlanta.

Flooding closed several streets, including Columbia Avenue between College and Essex Streets; North Cave Spring Street between Jule Peek Avenue and John Hand Road; East John Hand Road near the railroad tracks and Sixth Street at Girard.

Photos from one 11Alive viewer showed a car stuck in water up to the door handles near Hwy 278 West at the corner of Prior Station Road.

Other photos showed a swollen creek almost level with a bridge, and homes with ponds in their yard where none should be.

But Cedartown wasn't the only place to experience the weather's wrath, Tuesday.

That same evening, lightning strikes were believed to be the cause of a house fire and an apartment fire that displaced almost two dozen people. No one was injured, but officials did say they pulled a dog and a cat from the remnants of the house fire.

A fallen treen also blocked the busy intersection at Clairmont Road and Century Boulevard.

More tropical moisture is expected to bring further heavy rains at least through Thursday. A Flash Flood Watch will go into effect for metro Atlanta and north Georgia from 7 a.m. Wednesday through Thursday evening.

During the periods, heavy rainfall, creeks, and rivers may overflow their banks. Neighborhoods and other areas that ordinarily have flooding may see rapid rises in water levels with little or no warning.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action if conditions are warranted.
