Long-time Lawrenceville police chief announces retirement

He served as chief for 21 of his 33 years on the force.

One of metro Atlanta's longest-serving police chiefs is taking off his badge for good.

Lawrenceville Police Chief L. "Randy" Johnson Thursday announced his retirement from the department, marking an end to a 33-year career with the city. He served as police chief for 21 of those years.

"Chief Johnson has always been dedicated to excellence within the Lawrenceville Police Department," said City Manager Chuck Warbington.

"Under his leadership, Lawrenceville experienced a much stronger, safer and thriving local community and we are grateful to him for his service."

Johnson was recognized with several honors for his work in Lawrenceville. In 2015, he received both the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP) "Chief of the Year" Award, and the Gwinnett Chamber VALOR Award for Public Service and Leadership.

"It has been a privilege to serve with my fellow officers, my work family and my friends," Johnson said.

"It is an awesome responsibility to serve as a law enforcement officer and I am proud to have done so with some of the finest by my side."

Johnson's final day on the job will be March 22, Until, then, he will work to help make sure there is a stable transition of leadership within the police department.
