ATLANTA — MARTA Police say they're preparing for next February's Super Bowl by beefing up their force.
According to officials, the transit authority said they are 40 officers short and need to fill the ranks now. MARTA said because of attrition, people retiring or just moving on, they need to fill the ranks immediately, well before the Super Bowl when it comes to Atlanta.
Officials are expecting hundreds of thousands of people to flood the city, and right now, the urgency for officers is so great, MARTA is offering cash bonuses.
Qualified applicants can make between $36,000 a year, up to more than $56,000. Signing bonuses, based on experience level, range from $1,000 to $3,000.
But will the bonuses work? Many of the potential applicants 11Alive's Ron Jones spoke to said they're not sure the risk is worth the reward.
"I would be scared to be a police officer, because I'm really scared of guns," said Lucy Doris.
"It (the risk) would not, because I'm already making more," Shanta Watson said.
