ATLANTA — Residents in a West Atlanta neighborhood said they are fed up with a noisy, and potentially dangerous situation that's become all-too-familiar for metro area drivers.
Neighbors from Vine City and English Avenue sent 11Alive video of a loose metal plate at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and Walnut Street.
Residents said the plates were put in place after the Department of Watershed Management installed new lines at the intersection, but homeowners say it's evident that they were poorly installed. That's because every time a car, truck or MARTA bus rolls over the plate, it sends one end of it flapping - creating a loud rumble residents say is keeping them up at night.
"This is heard and felt inside neighbors homes," wrote Daryl Graham.
"Because it sounds and feels like thunder, homeowners are literally jolted out of bed each time they hear it - which is constantly," Graham vented. "During the day and evening is worst because there's more cars on the road."
Video shows several cars rolling over the plate, covering a piece of a significant hole adjacent to the street. But even when traveling at slow speeds, it's enough to disturb the plate.
"If the plates can't be removed immediately, they at least need to be installed properly so that there isn't a large boom when vehicles cross over them," Graham said.
He went on to call the situation an emergency, and urged city leaders to take action immediately, suggesting possible road closures in the same spots that were blocked while the new lines were installed.
"While the contractor may have installed the plates, the community is holding the city responsible for rectifying this issue," Graham said.
