It started as a fight in a Canton bar. Now, one man faces a murder charge

One man is dead and another in Cherokee County Jail.

CANTON, Ga. — A Georgia man is dead and another in jail after an alleged bar fight in Cherokee County on July 28.

Canton Police said 31-year-old Gary Matthew Allen of Jasper, Georgia is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery and murder during the commission of a felony following the death of 45-year-old Leon Danzis.

Officers were called to 185 Keith Drive in Canton around 10:19 p.m. Friday in reference to the fight. Danzis, reportedly from Hoschton, Georgia, was taken to Northside Cherokee Hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

His alleged killer, Allen, was taken to Cherokee County Jail on the charges. Police haven't released what led up to the deadly confrontation or what deadly weapon was used in the crime.

The investigation is still open and police are asking anyone who has information to call the Canton Police Department at 770-720-4883.
