Baghdad bombing death toll rises to at least 157

Iraq began three days of mourning Monday as the death toll from a weekend suicide bombing in Baghdad climbed to at least 157.

The Islamic State-claimed blast that hit Baghdad's Karrada district early Sunday was in an area packed with shoppers out on the streets after fasting for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

It was the worst single bombing in the country in more than a decade. It already has fueled public anger at Iraq's government over its ability to protect Iraqis amid a volatile political and security environment.

At least 190 people were wounded. The death toll may climb higher.

An angry crowd surrounded Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's convoy when he visited the site of the attack Sunday.

He subsequently ordered new security measures including the withdrawal of a bomb detection device used by Iraq's security forces. The device has been the subject of an investigation into how well it works.

Iraq has seen a recent increase in Islamic State attacks that have coincided with the group's losses on battlefields across the country over the past year.
