Ellen DeGeneres isn't convinced that Pixar's Finding Dory features a scene depicting a lesbian couple.
There was much Internet discussion after the latest trailer for the animated film (in theaters June 17) featured two women interacting with a toddler.
While the Internet exploded with the possible Disney/Pixar first, DeGeneres chuckled about the outcry when asked about it Thursday by USA TODAY.
DeGeneres, the voice of Dory in the anticipated sequel, says people were jumping to conclusions.
"I didn’t see it," she says of her first viewing of the film, adding that she kept an eye out for the supposed couple during her second viewing at the world premiere Wednesday night, which she attended with wife Portia de Rossi.
Well?
"One of the woman has really short hair," says DeGeneres, dryly, of the screen characters. "And I have to say, it’s not a great haircut because it was really chopped up in the back. ... I think people assume anyone with a bad short haircut is gay.
"Robin Wright has short hair. There are a lot of woman that are straight that have short hair. It’s just not as common."
At the premiere, Finding Dory director Andrew Stanton declined to confirm or deny whether the two women, seen fleetingly in the movie, were a lesbian couple.
"They can be whatever you want them to be," said Stanton. "There's no right or wrong answer."
"We never asked them," added producer Lindsey Collins.
"We have not asked that of any of the couples in any of our shots in any of our movies," Stanton said.
DeGeneres did offer a joking tidbit about Finding Dory.
"I will tell you this. And this is an exclusive. No one else knows this. There is a stingray in there that’s now Sting Rhonda," says DeGeneres. "So it’s a (transgender) sting."
