Governors Ball festival cancels Sunday event

The third and final day of Governors Ball music festival is canceled because of inclement weather, according to a statement issued on the fest's website

Sunday's event, held in New York's Randall's Island Park, "has officially been cancelled, due to severe weather and a high likelihood of lightning in the area," the statement reads. "The safety of fans, artists and crew always comes first." Customers who purchased Sunday tickets will be fully refunded, while those who bought three-day passes will be given partial refunds, the website continues.

Kanye West, Death Cab For Cutie and Two Door Cinema Club were among the artists set to headline Sunday. West's Governors Ball set would have been his first North American festival show since the release of his seventh album, The Life of Pablo, in February. He previously played the event in 2013.

Fans grew anxious about a possible cancellation Sunday morning, when the fest's website and app alerted that the park's opening was delayed because of weather. Artists such as Betty Who, Cold War Kids and Fidlar soon tweeted that their afternoon sets had been canceled, before the festival announced that the entire day had been nixed.

Governors Ball, now in its fifth year, faced soggy conditions both Friday and Saturday. Storms had been expected for Sunday afternoon and evening, although there was no warning of a possible cancellation until day-of. The fest last canceled Kings of Leon and other late-night sets in 2013 due to rain.

Luckily, disappointed fans won't have to wait long for another major festival to hit New York. The inaugural Panorama fest will take over Randall's Island Park July 22 through 24, headlined by Kendrick Lamar, LCD Soundsystem, Sia and Arcade Fire.
