DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Ryan Newman wants NASCAR to improve how it calls cautions at the end of restrictor-plate races.
Newman made a sharp comment in the drivers meeting Saturday prior to the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, criticizing officials' delayed caution call in Friday night's Xfinity Series race.
Addressing Sprint Cup Series director Richard Buck at the end of the drivers meeting, Newman asked NASCAR to err on the side of safety if there's a crash in overtime — suggesting the caution come out sooner instead of letting cars continue to race in front of the crash.
"We always err on the side of safety," Buck said.
"Try to do a better job than last night," Newman replied.
Buck did not respond and concluded the meeting as the audience murmured.
Earlier, Buck reminded drivers there was no rule against aggressive blocking but they should be conscious of the consequences.
When Tony Stewart questioned Buck further about blocking, Buck reiterated there was no rule against it but "be mindful of the effects of getting it wrong."
