Sophie Turner has made her mark on Game of Thrones as fan favorite Sansa Stark, and now she’s putting the power behind a young version of mutant superheroine Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse.
A telepathic and telekinetic girl with huge potential, Jean unleashes her full power against the villain Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) — in the form of a fiery winged phoenix form— when given the go-ahead by Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). “I wanted to see that image that we haven’t quite gotten to see,” says director Bryan Singer.
While Apocalypsehas its issues, it’s arguably a better take on the character than Famke Janssen's Jean in X-Men: The Last Stand, which gave a nod to the iconic 1980 Dark Phoenix saga from the comics where Jean loses control, becomes corrupted by her abilities and lands on the cosmic most-wanted list.
Turner told us she hasn’t spoken to Singer about it but has been dropping subtle hints that she’s game to go full Dark Phoenix in a future X-Men flick:
“It’s kind of set up for it in (Apocalypse) — you see hints of Phoenix. And it’s really exciting that we’re kind of exploring this good Phoenix at the moment and we’re not doing the Dark Phoenix. There are so many ways we can go with the character, and with these super-strong powers that she has, they should make a Dark Phoenix saga. (But) let’s hope I’ll be a good superhero for a while.”
