Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed that seven guests traveling on its Carnival Vista were involved in a bus crash Wednesday while they were on an independent tour off the ship in Belize.
NBC News was able to confirm from Belize Police that at least five people were hurt and six people died from the crash, which involved two vehicles. Two of those injured are from Atlanta, according to police.
Belize Police Corp. Randy Lyons said Hattieville Police were called to the scene around 3:10 p.m. on Georgia Price Highway. The crash involved a red Chevy Trax SUV and a gray Dodge Ram 3500 van. The driver of the van, 67-year-old Errol Anthony Belisle, died at the scene.. He was a tour guide traveling with 13 visitors, police said.
The initial investigation revealed the SUV was attempting to pass another vehicle when the driver hit the van, which was headed in the opposite direction. The three people inside of the SUV were killed and three people inside of the van also died. The driver of the SUV, Lourdes Wade, was at fault, according to police.
Two of the deceased, are Carnival guests, according to the cruise line. Five of their guests are still in the hospital, with one that has already been taken back to the U.S. for medical care.
Police said one of the Atlanta residents had a pelvic fracture from the crash and the other suffered abrasions on his face.
"Our Carnival CareTeam and medical staff are supporting guests and their families," Carnival said in a statement.
Carnival also said there were guests from at least one other cruise line aboard the bus.
The Carnival Vista is on a 7-day trip that left Galveston, Texas on Saturday. It's scheduled to return to Galveston on Nov. 30.
