NBC: R. Kelly arrested on federal sex crime charges

Sources tell NBC the R&B singer will likely be sent to New York to face the new charges.

CHICAGO — Authorities are reporting R. Kelly has been arrested yet again in Chicago on charges that may send him to New York.

NBC News reports the famed R&B singer, whose real name is Robert Kelly, was arrested by New York detectives along with investigators from the Department of Homeland Security.

NBC, citing sources, reports he will likely be taken back to New York on federal sex crime charges. Kelly has long denied sexual abuse allegations against him but has recently come back into the limelight due to a scathing documentary and allegations of aggravated sexual abuse involving women in Illinois.

The abuse allegedly involved minors though Kelly pleaded not guilty to the charges.  NBC reports he faced 11 more counts of sexual assault and sex abuse in May.

Kelly also faces allegations from a metro Atlanta family that their daughter is being held captive in a sex cult. The family told 11Alive that they have, for years, demanded to see her in person. Their daughter, however, has said publicly that she is not being held against her will.

The attorney for that family released a statement Friday morning:

“We are satisfied that Federal Authorities believed the families and survivors that were victims of Robert Kelly. We will be traveling to Chicago soon to reunite with Joycelyn," attorney Gerald Griggs said. "We thank the jurors and prosecutors that returned the indictment against R Kelly. We are hopeful that justice will be served in this case.”
