WASHINGTON D.C., DC — The FBI is investigating a new wave of offensive and racist messages targeting high school students, Hispanic communities, and LGBTQ+ groups, according to a release posted Friday.
These messages reportedly include threats of deportation or placement in "re-education camps," according to complaints received by the agency. Some recipients also noted receiving similar messages via email.
This development follows previous incidents where racist text messages were sent to Black people nationwide, including in metro Atlanta, shortly after the recent election.
The FBI has clarified that no violence linked to these messages has been reported at this time.
If you've received an offensive message like this, the FBI encourages you to report the details to the FBI by phone at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or online at tips.fbi.gov.
