WASHINGTON — All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are up for election as part of the 2024 November election, which will decide the balance of power for the first two years of the next presidency

There are also 34 Senate seats on the line.

The campaign for control of the House is seen as a toss-up. Ahead of Election Day, Republicans held a 220-212 majority, with three vacancies.

If Democrats win control of the U.S. House again, Hakeem Jeffries would likely make history as the first Black speaker of the House.

Here is a breakdown of votes across the country and an updated balance of power for the U.S. House.

Who would be Speaker if Democrats win the House?

Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, 54, would be in line to make history as the first Black speaker of the House if Democrats wrest control of the chamber away from the Republicans.

The Brooklyn-born Jeffries took over as House Democratic leader when Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi stepped aside, making him heir apparent to the speaker’s office. He is poised to win internal party balloting as leader again later this year, regardless of the election results.

But if Democrats win majority control, he would stand for election as speaker by the whole House, when the new Congress convenes in January.

Who would be Speaker if Republicans keep control of the House?

House Speaker Mike Johnson would likely keep his post if Republicans once again win control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Johnson took over after Kevin McCarthy was ejected in a historic far-right revolt.

When will we know the election results?

The election results will begin to be announced after polls close in each respective state. However, because of some close contests and different procedures by state, it could take days or longer before the final outcome is known in some key House races.
