ATLANTA — A concert Friday night in Atlanta featuring major R&B acts will have some special guests: 300 military veterans being gifted free entry.
The Black Friday R&B Mega Fest show is featuring big names like Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills, Montell Jordan and The Whispers.
"Our veterans have served our nation unselfishly and it's time we honor and celebrate them with a unique holiday experience," said organizer Victory B. Pernell. "We just want veterans to know that they are greatly appreciated and we are putting action behind the words by giving away complimentary tickets and providing free transportation for the musical experience that will include the most legendary figures in the industry."
The lineup is stocked with heavy hitters, and also includes Jeffrey Osborne, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Donell Jones, Cherrelle, Freddie Jackson, and Ralph Tresvant.
"It was important to make all of this happen near the holiday so veterans know that they are not forgotten but celebrated in high fashion," Pernell said. "I can't wait to see their faces when they see Chaka Khan, Jeffrey Osborne and Stephanie Mills on the stage.
Pernell is himself a retired veteran who volunteers with veterans' causes.
"I pray the holiday season is a little brighter this year for some veterans because of our efforts to celebrate their service and sacrifice," he said. "Let us all rally behind our veterans for all the right reasons."
The concert on Friday night starts at 6 p.m. at State Farm Arena.
