NEW ORLEANS — Renowned poet Nikki Giovanni has died following her third cancer diagnosis.
Giovanni first published her poetry collection in 1968 and quickly became a figure in the Black literary arts world and the Civil Rights movement. She published collections with themes of politics, race, love and much more.
Giovanni was a professor at Virginia Tech, where she taught English for more than three decades and was working on her final book before she passed.
Nikki Giovanni was 81 years old.
