NWS confirms third tornado touched down in Georgia Tuesday

Officials said no injuries were reported.

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a third tornado touched down in Georgia when severe weather rolled through the state Tuesday.

Fortunately no one reported injuries from the three tornadoes, the NWS said.

Friday afternoon, weather officials said an EF-0 twister hit Fayette County with peak winds around 65 to 70 miles per hour. The tornado was about 150 yards wide with a length of 0.6 miles.

NWS said the tornado briefly touched down several miles north of Fayetteville around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, snapping several trees between Bentley Way and Thornton Drive.

Out of the three tornadoes that hit Georgia Tuesday, the Fayette County one was the weakest.

Friday morning, the NWS confirmed that a tornado touched down in Locust Grove in Henry County on Tuesday. The EF-0 storm peaked with winds at 75 miles per hour. Some trees were snapped and uprooted near Highway 42 between Barnes Drive and Davis Road. 

The porch of a home were also lifted in the area.

An EF-0 tornado left behind debris in Clayton County about 1.7 miles north of the city of Riverdale on Tuesday. It moved across the ground for 3 miles before lifting up 0.8 miles south-southeast of Forest Park  

Several trees were snapped along Georgia Highway 85 north of Riverdale. The tornado also ripped a few shingles off of an apartment building and uprooted several trees as it moved to the north-northeast.

The classification of the strength of tornadoes are based on the "Enhanced Fujita Scale," which runs from EF-0, with winds of 65-to-85 mph through EF-5, with winds above 200 mph, as listed below:

  • EF-0 - Weak - 65-to-85 mph
  • EF-1 - Weak - 86-to-110 mph
  • EF-2 - Strong - 111-to-135 mph
  • EF-3 - Strong - 136-to-165 mph
  • EF-4 - Violent - 166-to-200 mph
  • EF-5 - Violent - Above 200 mph
