One dead in downtown Atlanta building fire

An officer saw smoke from the building and called in the fire.

An early morning fire Sunday killed one man and gutted the second floor of a two-story downtown Atlanta building.

Firefighters told 11Alive News that an Atlanta police officer noticed smoke coming from the building at 79 Broad Street, SW, around 1 a.m.

When firemen arrived, they had to cut open a door to get inside the building. Because of heavy smoke, they called for extra help and, eventually, a total of 60 firemen had responded.

They weren't able to save a man whose body they found on the heavily damaged second floor.

At this point, no cause for the fire has been determined and the victim's name hasn't been released.

It's not known what the man was doing in the building at the time of the fire.
