Officers disguised as construction workers enforce hands-free law in Cobb

Undercover officers from three agencies dressed as construction workers in an effort to observe violations by drivers.

KENNESAW, Ga. — If you saw construction workers on the side of the road Tuesday morning in Kennesaw, they may not have been doing exactly what you thought they were.

The Cobb County Police Department participated in a joint traffic enforcement operation with the Acworth and Kennesaw police departments, focusing on enforcement of the hands-free law.

Undercover officers from the three agencies dressed as construction workers at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Blue Springs Road. These officers communicated to uniformed officers when a violation was observed and a traffic stop was initiated, Cobb County Police Officer Sydney Melton said.

During the three-hour sting, 65 citations were issued for cell phone violations. These violations included motorists texting while driving, scrolling through websites and talking on the phone, Melton said.

In addition, 16 seatbelt citations were issued along with seven license violation citations and 13 citations for other offenses. Police also made one arrest.

"This operation was an effort to prevent distracted driving-related accidents, ensure safety of motorists in our community, and a part of the Cobb County Police Department’s continued effort to partner with other law enforcement agencies in Cobb communities," Melton said.
