Educator wins runoff contest for Atlanta Board of Education seat

Alfred "Shivy" Brooks is currently a high school economics, finance and government teacher outside APS in the Clayton County district.

ATLANTA — Alfred "Shivy" Brooks won the runoff race in the election for an at-large seat on the Atlanta Board of Education.

Brooks becomes, according to his campaign, the first active teacher to serve on the city's Board of Education, which oversees Atlanta Public Schools.

Brooks, who is currently a high school economics, personal finance and government teacher outside the APS district in Clayton County, won the race for the at-large District 7 seat against incumbent Tamara Jones with 65% of the vote - 9,002 votes in all, according to results.

He had run on a campaign platform of equitable distribution of resources, addressing disparities in access to advanced courses and extracurricular activities, and promoting strategies to close achievement gaps, among other points of emphasis.

Brooks has been active in politics previously, running unsuccessfully for a City Council seat in 2021.

He also tragically lost his son Bryce earlier this year, when the 16-year-old junior at Maynard Jackson High died trying to help rescue several children caught in a strong current at a beach in Florida.

"Our boy sprung to action," Brooks said at the time. "In that time of being selfless, our son Bryce, while being pulled by currents himself, called for help -- not for himself but for the kids he was looking out for."
