COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The future of public transportation in Cobb County will be up for debate Tuesday morning.
A significant part of the plan would involve bus rapid transit (BRT) routes - which are designed to function like rail, with dedicated lanes and stops.
The most expansive line in Cobb County would connect the Kennesaw State area down to the Cumberland area around Truist Park.
What the Cobb County Board of Commissioners will have to decide on Tuesday is what, if any, plan to send to voters on the 2024 ballot - and what kind of tax burden that might come with.
The funding would come from a penny sales tax increase that, if approved by voters, would raise more than $10 billion over 30 years. The first 10 years of collections would help build out the system, and the last 20 years would ensure its maintenance.
Commissioners could also opt for a 10-year tax that would raise enough money to partially build out 53 miles of routes.
At least two members of the five-person board have already signaled they wouldn't support a sales tax increase.
If the board can agree on a list of projects at Tuesday's meeting, they will then vote on whether to put the tax increase to Cobb County voters next year. The meeting begins at 9 a.m.
