ATLANTA — Georgia voters headed to the polls on Election Day May 21 to cast ballots in the Georgia Primary and decide hundreds of races.
While some were called early in the night for a handful of incumbents -- including Barry Loudermilk, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, Lucy McBath and Georgia Supreme Court Justice Andrew Pinson -- results were still outstanding for a wide range of races across the state and smaller municipalities.
In some cases, early results on election night were projecting a few races -- including for Clayton County sheriff, DeKalb County CEO and the GOP race for Congressional District 3 would be headed for a runoff after no winner was decided.
What is a runoff election?
A runoff election happens when no one candidate wins 50% plus 1 of the vote total outright.
If that happens, then the top two finishers in that race advance to face off in another election to determine a winner.
Which races will be headed to a runoff?
Below are some of the races to watch that will likely be headed to a runoff in June (this list will be updated as needed). For a full list of election results, go to 11alive.com/elections.
When is the Georgia Primary runoff election?
Runoff elections happen on the fourth Tuesday after a general or primary election after votes from the previous election. Early voting for that election will begin one week before the runoff date.
For the May Primary, the date for the runoff is set for June 18.
