Antonio Brown elected to District 3 post of Atlanta City Council

Brown won the seat 669 to 587 votes.

ATLANTA — Atlanta residents quietly elected their new councilman during a runoff Tuesday night.

Local businessman Antonio Brown won the City Council seat in District 3, which includes the Vine City, English Avenue and Atlantic Station neighborhoods if Atlanta. He defeated former Atlanta Public Schools board member Byron Amos by 669 votes to 587 votes, or a margin of 53.3 percent to 46.7%.

Amos actually garnered the largest percentage of the votes before the runoff with 23 percent or 358 votes. Brown tied with Greg Clay for second place with 19 percent  - or 295 and 293 votes, respectively. Brown survived a court challenge to stay in the runoff and ultimately won.

In a statement, Atlanta City Council President Felicia Moore congratulated and welcomed Brown to the council.

“Thank you to Atlanta’s District 3 residents for your patience and engagement throughout the electoral process," Moore said. "The Council looks forward to conducting business on behalf of the city again with complete citywide representation.”

Brown's website says he's a successful CEO and has a passion for business and education. He has a non-profit and a scholarship fund that sends children impacted by HIV and AIDS to summer camp.

During a victory speech Tuesday night, Brown told 11Alive that he considers himself an anti-establishment politician.

"My campaign was really driven by the people," he said. "I believe the people were tired. They wanted their voices to be heard, and that is a reflection of the outcome of today."

The election was held to fill the vacant seat formerly held by the late Ivory Lee Young, who died in November.

Brown's term lasts through 2021.
