Shifts in Atlanta’s core counties reflect 2024 presidential election trends

Here’s a breakdown of the changes based on the latest available results from the Georgia Secretary of State.

ATLANTA — Metro Atlanta’s five core counties—Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett—saw shifts in voter turnout and candidate preference between the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections. 

Here’s a breakdown of the changes based on the latest available results from the Georgia Secretary of State.

Clayton County sees modest shifts in 2024 turnout

In 2020, former President Joe Biden received 95,476 votes, a significant margin over Donald Trump’s 15,813 votes. Jo Jorgensen, the Libertarian candidate, garnered 1,055 votes. 

By 2024, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris led with 94,092 votes, closely mirroring Biden’s previous count, while Trump’s support increased slightly to 16,854 votes. Libertarian support dropped, with Chase Oliver receiving 298 votes and Jill Stein, running under the Green Party, earning 351 votes.

Cobb County remains blue with slight gains for Trump

Cobb County maintained its leaning toward Democratic candidates across both election cycles. Biden’s 2020 vote count in Cobb was 221,846, compared to Trump’s 165,459. Jo Jorgensen received 6,441 votes in 2020. 

In 2024, Harris saw a slight increase to 227,640 votes, while Trump also gained, reaching 168,286. Libertarian support fell notably, with Oliver receiving 2,328 votes, and Stein drew 1,945 votes for the Green Party.

DeKalb County upholds strong Democratic support

DeKalb County showed one of the strongest Democratic leanings. Biden’s 2020 lead was substantial, with 308,227 votes against Trump’s 58,373. Jorgensen managed to attract 4,204 votes. 

Harris's vote total decreased slightly to 299,039 in 2024, while Trump's total increased to 62,482. Oliver and Stein garnered fewer votes, 1,557 and 2,183, respectively.

Fulton County turnout mirrors 2020 with minor changes

Fulton County, the largest in metro Atlanta, continued its Democratic trend. Biden led in 2020 with 381,144 votes, far surpassing Trump’s 137,240. Jorgensen received 6,275 votes. 

Harris’s 2024 total stood at 380,013, slightly lower than Biden’s. Trump’s support rose to 142,912, while Oliver and Stein received 2,452 and 3,244 votes, respectively, signaling reduced support for third-party candidates.

Gwinnett County voter trends align closely with 2020

Gwinnett County showed consistent support for Democratic candidates, with Biden receiving 241,827 votes in 2020 compared to Trump’s 166,413. Jorgensen received 5,625 votes.

In 2024, Harris’s vote count slightly increased to 242,125, while Trump’s rose to 172,819. Third-party support again dropped, with Oliver receiving 1,920 votes and Stein attracting 3,203 votes.

In Atlanta’s core counties, Democratic support remained strong, though Harris’ totals were generally close to or slightly below Biden’s 2020 numbers, whereas Trump saw slight increases across all counties. Third-party candidates experienced a notable decline in votes.
