Late Friday afternoon, the Democratic campaign of Carolyn Bordeaux announced its intention to formally file for a recount in the 7th Congressional District race.
Bordeaux currently trails her Republican opponent Rob Woodall by only 419 votes, or 0.14 percent of the more than 280,000 votes cast in the entire race. Per Georgia state law, a recount may be requested when the margin is within 1 percent.
"It is crucial that every eligible vote is counted and every voice is heard," said Bordeaux spokesman Jake Best in a statement. "We want to make sure every vote was counted correctly and fairly, and that is why we intend to request a recount of this race."
Under Georgia law, a recount cannot be requested until interim Georgia Secretary of State Robyn Crittenden certifies the state's election results. Once the election results have been certified, Bordeaux's campaign says they intend to file their formal recount request.
