Cobb County warning residents about fake text messages urging voters to apply for absentee ballots

The Cobb County Elections currently does not send out unsolicited voting information through text messages, according to a release.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County is warning residents about fake text messages they may be receiving this election season.

According to the county, several people have contacted Cobb's Elections Department, saying they received text messages urging them to apply for an absentee ballot. The text messages appear like they're coming from a Cobb Elections phone number and point recipients to the Secretary of State's absentee ballot request page.

However, while the link may be legitimate, the county said the text messages are not from Cobb Elections, and the phone number is a spoof.

It also said that Cobb County Elections does not send out unsolicited voting information through text messages.

The incident has been reported to the state. Cobb Information Technology Services and others are investigating, according to a release.
