Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux is asking the Secretary of State's office for a recount for Georgia's 7th Congressional District.
Bourdeaux is running against incumbent Republican Rob Woodall.
The Secretary of State's Office shows Woodall having 140,430 votes which gives him 50.07 percent. Bourdeaux stands at 140,011 votes at 49.93 percent. The difference between the two candidates is only 419 votes.
"This is one of the closest races in the state," she said. " This is the closest Congressional race in a long, long time."
Bourdeaux stated that she is concerned about the transparency and fairness of recount process, especially for the absentee and provisional paper ballots that were cast in the election.
"What we are asking is that we are able to observe the process when these votes are recounted," she said. "Also we are asking for a hand recount."
Bourdeaux claims some of the ballots that were turned in were folded in half and the crease runs through her name.
"Many election experts have told us this will cause errors in the recount," she said.
Bourdeaux said they also filed an open records request.
"We did file an open records request with Gwinnett to be able to see the ballots that were transcribed, the absentee ballots that had the fold and might have had a problem. That was filed on Friday of last week"
Tuesday morning, Boudeaux said Gwinnett hadn't responded to the request yet. She said she is also concerned about votes beyond her race.
"I do see this is in a part as an overall effort to reform election processes in Georgia so that everybody can have confidence that their vote is being counted."
Bourdeaux said the recount is expected to begin Wednesday.
