Voters eager to make their voices heard in Georgia amid record-breaking early voting numbers

Early voting ends Nov. 1. Over a million Georgians have chosen to vote before Election Day.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Early voters continue casting their ballots for the general election in Georgia this weekend as they head to the polls to make a crucial decision.

Voters filled the lines at several polling locations in Cobb County on Saturday.

Sharon and Chuck Fox didn’t want to miss out on making their voices heard.

“We wanted to make sure we had the opportunity to vote,” said Chuck Fox. “We normally vote on Election Day, but this year, we’ll be out of the country.”

The Foxes have joined the ranks of over a million Georgians who have chosen to vote before Election Day.

Data from the Secretary of State’s Office showed turnout has remained strong for this year’s election. More than 313,000 people cast ballots on Tuesday’s early voting kickoff.

“Just to give context, turnout was about five million in 2020,” said political science professor Nathan Price.

Among those who have voted early

Price, who instructs classes at the University of North Georgia, believes Cobb and Gwinnett counties will be key areas to watch for as early voting continues.

“Those suburban counties are the difference between winning or losing Georgia,” said Price.

On Saturday at the Smyrna Community Center, early voters, including Sonya Brown, kept filing in.

Brown said she wanted to make her voice heard ahead of election day.

“Actually, it was the spur of the moment. It said the wait time was not that long. I knew that I wanted to do early voting before Nov. 5 because I know the lines are going to be really long on that day,” said Brown.

Early voting ends Nov. 1, just a few days before the general election.
