FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County election officials have ordered a recount of all votes cast in every race from the most recent election Nov. 7, according to a notice posted onto the county's election website.
The recount is set to take place on Monday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m., one day before the deadline for which counties across the state must certify election results.
According to a statement released by a county spokesperson, the Board of Elections is calling for the recount in order to "confirm the accuracy of the election results," adding that the action is "consistent with commitment by the Department of Registration & Elections to review several races affected by recent redistricting." The county said a recount would provide "additional verification" of results for those races that are headed to a runoff in December.
Under Georgia law, a recount can be called at any time before the results of an election have been certified if either the elections superintendent deems it necessary or a candidate or political party requests one if it "appears that a discrepancy or error" has been made. 11Alive asked for clarification on if and what kind of possible discrepancy may have happened, and in response received the county's statement that didn't mention a possible discrepancy but referenced recent redistricting.
Fulton County voters went to the polls on Nov. 7 to cast ballots in more than two dozen races to decide several council seats, mayors races and others. Turnout was expectedly low and made for some tight results -- including the race for South Fulton Council District 5.
That race between three candidates, shown above, is headed to a runoff since no one reached the 50% plus 1 vote threshold to win the race outright. However, the difference between the second and third-place finishers is only 1 vote. In that instance, a recount could change the outcome of which candidate would appear on the ballot for the Dec. 5 runoff if the recount uncovers any voting discrepancies.
