Georgia Secretary of State discusses efforts to hire veterans as poll workers for election season

Vet the Vote is the organization spearheading the effort with "a specific mission to recruit veterans and family members of service members to serve as election work

ATLANTA — Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger spoke to the media Tuesday about a new initiative he hopes will encourage veterans to sign up as poll workers in the state.

Vet the Vote is the organization spearheading the effort with "a specific mission to recruit veterans and family members of service members to serve as election workers."

Raffensperger referred to veterans as "the most trusted organization in America... What they've done is they've actually set aside the politics and know people from all over the country... coming to serve together, and they build them into a cohesive unifying force to protect us."

As far as the job itself of being a poll worker, Raffensperger said, "People see the process, and it builds confidence."

Dan Vellone, the director of Vet the Vote, further discussed this topic, calling this moment a time for people to serve each other.

Both men added that they will begin their efforts by reaching out to counties with high veteran populations, such as Paulding and Muscogee County.

Raffensperger also touched on the shocking events from the weekend, where a gunman at a Pennsylvania rally attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump.

"I wish former President Trump a speedy recovery," the secretary of state said while also lifting up the man who was tragically killed, adding, "He bravely covered his wife and daughter from danger during the shooting."

Raffensperger ended his comments about the weekend's violence by saying, "There is zero place for political violence. As Americans, we need to unite together around the core ideal of our founders and that is we handle our political disputes at the ballot box."
