ATLANTA — The 2024 election cycle is upon us. Georgia voters will soon pack the polls to cast ballots in important races this year, including the presidential election.
11Alive wants to make sure Georgia voters are prepared ahead of Election Day. All registered voters are required to show a photo ID at the poll. The Secretary of State's Office said this allows county officials to ensure that it's you when casting your ballot.
Here is a look at the acceptable forms of ID when Georgians vote.
What IDs can I use to vote in person?
In Georgia, there are seven different acceptable forms of identification a person bring with them to their voting precinct.
- A valid state or federal government-issued photo ID, including a free ID card issued by your county registrar's office or the Georgia Department of Driver Services.
- A Georgia driver's license -- even if expired
- Student ID from a Georgia public College or University
- Valid employee photo ID from any branch, department, agency, or entity of the U.S. Government, Georgia, or any county, municipality, board, authority or other entity of the state
- A valid U.S. passport ID
- A valid U.S. military photo ID containing a photograph of the voter
- A valid tribal photo ID containing a photograph of the voter
How can I get a Georgia voter identification card if I need one?
For Georgians who don't have one of the previous mentioned acceptable forms of ID, the state officers a free voter ID card that is free. They can be issued at any county registrar's office or at the Department of Driver Services Office.
Here is what you need to request one:
- A photo identity document or approved non-photo identity document that includes full legal name and date of birth
- Documentation showing the voter's date of birth
- Evidence that the applicant is a registered voter in the State of Georgia
- Documentation showing the applicant's name and residential address
What ID can I use to cast an absentee ballot?
In Georgia, a voter submitting an application to cast a ballot must include the number from their driver’s license. Voters who don't have one can include the number from their state-issued.
If a voter doesn't have one of these two forms of ID, a copy or photo of one of the following options are acceptable:
- A U.S. Passport
- A Georgia voter identification card
- Other valid photo identification card issued by a branch, department, agency, or entity of the State of Georgia, any other state, or the United States authorized by law to issue personal identification
- A U.S. military identification card provided that such identification card contains a photograph of the voter
- Employee identification card issued by any branch, department, agency, or entity of the United States government, Georgia state government, or Georgia county, municipality, board, authority, or any other entity of the state of Georgia provided that such employee identification card contains a photograph of the voter
- Tribal identification card, provided that such identification card contains a photograph of the voter
- Student ID from a Georgia public College or University
OR
- Any of the following documents that show the voter's name and address:
- Current utility bill
- Bank statement
- Paycheck
- Government check
- Other government document.
