BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — John Park, the new mayor-elect in Brookhaven, was hailed as the first Asian American mayor in Georgia after his election victory Tuesday night.

Park, who is Korean-American, won the runoff against Lauren Kiefer with 59% of the vote - 3,564 votes in total. Park had also been the leading vote-getter in the original vote back on Nov. 7.

The longtime city councilmember in Brookhaven highlighted his record during the campaign of the city maintaining low taxes and improving parks and greenspace while he's been in office.

"We're going to do great things together... I'll be a mayor for ALL of Brookhaven, especially those that didn't vote for me. Thank you to every single one of you that called your friends and volunteered. It's you that won, not me. It's Brookhaven that won tonight," he said in a victory speech.

Park was congratulated on social media by both Georgia House Rep. Dr. Michelle Au and former state Rep. Bee Nguyen, who was the Democratic nominee for secretary of state last year.

"Brookhaven just elected Georgia's first Asian American mayor! Congrats John @electpark!" Nguyen wrote.
