Georgia governor describes potential political impact of attempted assassination against Trump

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp appeared on CNN at the Republican National Convention.

MILWAUKEE — Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is weighing in on the upcoming presidential election and the attempted assassination against former President Donald Trump.

Kemp spoke to CNN multiple times at the Republican National Convention this week and expressed how he is seeing unification in the party -- particularly since the first debate in Atlanta

"I think Republicans are unifying for one reason: We can't afford four more years of Joe Biden," he said Tuesday.

He has said that he will continue to support the Republican ticket, which is now former President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio.

In general, the unification may also be amplified after Trump made his first public appearance at the RNC following the attempted assassination at his rally, where a man died and two others were injured.

The governor said to CNN that regardless of one's political leanings, it was powerful how Trump showed up at the event and the support people have shown since Saturday's deadly shooting.

"That just shows the spirit of America to me," he said.

Regarding the overall political impact the tragedy could have on the country, Kemp said that the way the former president showed strength should only be positive for him. He believes that it will help "galvanize" the Republican base.

"I was very sad that that could happen in today's politics but also very thankful that he survived but also just hurt, you know, you got a family that lost a husband and a father, and I'm sure a son," Kemp said. "You got two people that were injured, and it was just horrible."

The governor also said that both President Joe Biden and Trump have discussed the importance of unity following the deadly shooting. Kemp believes that the former president has an opportunity to hone in on that message and "move his campaign to a different level."

He hopes that as Trump's campaign moves forward, people continue to see the spirit of campaigning hard and going to the ballot box with vigor for one's candidate. However, he was quick to denounce violence and "over-the-top rhetoric" on both sides of the aisle. Instead, he told CNN that he hoped the election would focus on policy.

The governor stated that the convention is an opportunity to show those what the party stands for and look toward the country's future.

"Let's make ourselves better every day. Let's make the country better. Let's tell people what we're doing to make the country better," Kemp said.
