Georgians pay their respects to former first lady Rosalynn Carter

People in metro Atlanta visited The Carter Center Sunday evening after learning that the former first lady had died.

ATLANTA — People stopped by The Carter Center Sunday evening to pay their respects to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

The agency announced Sunday that she passed away at her home in Plains, Georgia at 96 years old.

Former President Jimmy Carter described his wife, Rosalynn, as his equal partner in everything he accomplished. Less than an hour after learning of her passing, people began to wander the grounds of The Carter Center.

"I think everyone in Georgia loved her without any any exception. No one didn't love Mrs. Carter," said Joel Silverman who left flowers.

Others came out to remember what they said was a life well lived.

"As a couple, they worked together," Barbara Kiska said about the Carters. "They worked with so many people and they are just such a shining example of what political leadership should be."

The former first lady was dedicated to bring awareness to cognitive health concerns. Her family also publicly discussed her experiences as well. She was diagnosed with dementia in May. It was announced on Nov. 17 that she had entered hospice. At the time, the Carter Center said she and her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, were "spending time with each other and their family."

The Carter Center has published a tribute page in her honor.
