Jimmy Carter's grandson discusses the president's plan to vote for Kamala Harris, 100th birthday celebration

His grandson, Jason Carter, spoke on MSNBC early Thursday about his grandfather's birthday plans, his call to action to vote in the November election and his health.

ATLANTA — As Jimmy Carter's 100th birthday approached, the Carter Center planned an epic concert to celebrate the president's life and legacy.

His grandson, Jason Carter, spoke on MSNBC early Thursday about his grandfather's birthday plans, his call to action to vote in the November election and his health.

Jason said Jimmy Carter's health has been "in the same position" for the past 17 months, stating that it's "remarkable" that he's been in hospice this long and living his life.

Back in February, the Carter marked one year since Jimmy Carter had entered hospice care.

"He's really in the same position he has been in for the last 17 months. I mean, it's been a remarkable experience for us. When he first went into hospice, we thought it was a matter of days," Jason Carter stated. "But he keeps waking up in the morning, and he's still living his life. We have learned that we're not in charge. As part of his faith journey, he is approaching this as you would expect, with real humility and with real excitement about watching the world go through this process. He's doing well."

NBC's Andrea Mitchell addressed the president's longevity after his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, passed away.

"The two of them had this incredible American love story. As you know, we all expected that this would be a huge blow to him, but at the end of the day, I think he really was proud that he made it with her to the end, and he said to us he was thrilled at the outpouring of love for her at her memorial services and when she passed," he added.

Rosalynn Carter, who died in November, about six months after the Carter family disclosed her dementia diagnosis, lived only a few days under hospice supervision, with her frail husband at her bedside. His grandson commented on his journey without his wife and his faith.

"And he's really given himself over to this journey. He knows he's not in charge, and he's watching the world and living his days one at a time. He, like the rest of us, misses her terribly!"

NBC's Andrea Mitchell also asked Jason Carter about Jimmy Carter's plan to vote for Kamala Harris in the general election in November.  Jason Carter also spoke about Donald Trump and the "darkness" that he cast in the political world.

"His legacy is one of integrity, honesty, love and respect for the people of this country. I think we have seen a real poisonous environment since Donald Trump came into our politics. It's not just weird, as the people have been saying, but it's dark and mean, and I think that that darkness is not who my grandfather was. It's not who we really are as Americans," Jason Carter stated. "I think he is excited to participate in putting that behind us. He did say that he was looking forward to it and that he would get a vote by mail in Georgia and cast his ballot for it."

Lastly, Jason Carter spoke about an epic concert that will be held on Sept. 17 at the Fox Theatre for his centennial birthday!

"We have a remarkable concert that is coming up. Music was always really important to my grandfather he was the first real rock and roll president and he's got these great friends that will participate, the Allman brothers from Georgia were especially important to him," he continued. "Obviously, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and his friends were always there for him, and it meant a lot to him. This is an opportunity for us to use music to bring people together in his honor. So we are thrilled by the lineup."

Tickets will cost $100 to attend, according to the Carter Center. They will officially be available to the public starting on August 5 at 10 a.m.
