ATLANTA — Among the remembrances to follow this week on the passing last Sunday of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter is an especially timely memory that popped up on social media - the Carters' Thanksgiving menu from 1977.
The menu was shared first by NBC presidential historian Michael Beschloss and is available at the National Archives website.
"Following is our proposed menu for Thanksgiving Day Dinner at Camp David. Would you please add, delete or make any other changes that will help us to make this a perfect Thanksgiving for the First Family?" the document states.
Rosalynn's hand-written notes accompany the menu, which reads as follows:
- Roast turkey
- Cornbread dressing
- Candied sweet potatoes
- Whipped potatoes
- Natural turkey gravy
- Green peas w/ mushrooms
- Fresh cranberry sauce
- Waldorf salad
- Rolls -butter
- Pumpkin pie w/ whipped cream
- Coffee - tea - milk
Rosalynn's alterations focused on crossing out the whipped potatoes and the green peas.
"Jimmy doesn't especially like green peas," she wrote, substituting in fresh green beans ("best not frozen ones," she added in parentheses.)
