A former U.S. Senator could soon be the latest Georgian appointed to a major position by President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, the White House released an announcement that Trump intends to appoint Saxby Chambliss to his Intelligence Advisory Board. His name was listed along with Jeremy Katz of Illinois, James Donovan of Virginia, Kevin E. Hulbert of Pennsylvania and David Robertson of New Jersey.
Chambliss served two terms in the U.S. Senate and four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
During his time in the Senate, he was a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and the Senate Rules Committee.
He was also appointed to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence where he served for three years as vice chairman.
Chambliss is currently listed as a partner at the law firm, DLA Piper.
As an appointee to the Intelligence Advisory Board, Chambliss would offer advice on and deliberate in confidential matters regarding U.S. intelligence. The board itself operates as an independent element within the executive branch and has been around for more than 60 years.
The group exists exclusively to assist the President as an independent source of advice.
Chambliss won't be the first Georgian to be tapped by the president for a major role since Trump took office. The current Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, is a former governor in the state. Former Rep. Tom Price of Roswell was also the Health and Human Services Secretary before resigning from the position.
