Stacey Abrams honored as a 'legal legend' day after delivering SOTU rebuttal

During her first public appearance after giving the Democratic Party's response to the State of the Union Address, Abrams received a Legal Legend award in Atlanta.

ATLANTA — Just one day after giving the rebuttal to the State of the Union address, Democrat Stacey Abrams received an honor in Atlanta.

Attending the America Constitution Society's Legal Legends Award's Reception, Abrams was among three receiving the Legal Legend Award from the Georgia Chapter.

11Alive's Hope Ford attended the event, curious if Abrams would mention her speech or any additional comments made by President Donald Trump.

Abram's camp denied a one-on-one interview with reporters and Abrams didn't mention her rebuttal at all during her award acceptance speech. However, that didn't stop others from bringing it up.

Monica Modi Khant, Executive Director of Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network, another Legal Legend award recipient, even ended her award speech with a quote from Abram's SOTU response.

"We may come from different sides of the political aisle, but our joint commitment to the ideals of this nation cannot be negotiable," Khant quoted.

Georgia Rep. Bee Nguyen, Abram's successor, said she couldn't wait for Abram's to run for political office again. While Abram's hasn't announced her future political plans, many speculate a 2020 run against Senator David Perdue.

If she does plan to run, President Donald Trump made it clear he thinks it's a bad idea. According to USA Today, Trump told reporters during a conversation, "(Senator David) Perdue would be very hard to beat," and the president doesn't "think she will win."

During the ACS's event, Abrams didn't touch on national politics or possible political runoffs, but she did bring up voter suppression and her plans for a lawsuit with Fair Fight Georgia, which was started after her loss to Brian Kemp for governor of Georgia.

"It is a lawsuit that says if you are on the roles, you should not be purged because you choose not to vote. It is a lawsuit that you should not go to a precinct that has missing power boards or too few machines because they don't think your community looks like the type of community that votes. It is a lawsuit that says while individually each of those things may be legal, together they form a system of disenfranchisement that violates the 14th amendment, the 15th amendment, the voting rights act and the constitution and by god our beliefs as Americans," Abrams said to applause from the crowd.

Abrams quickly left the event, after giving her acceptance speech.
