ATLANTA — Georgia U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams may be an even bigger fan of President Joe Biden since he stepped out of the presidential race.
After Biden's weak performance during his Atlanta debate with Republican Donald Trump, Williams was among those who continued to back Biden's candidacy.
Now, the Georgia Democratic chair not only admires Biden for strengthening the Democratic ticket by yielding to Vice President Kamala Harris.
When she flew with Biden last month to an event in Nevada, Williams said the president spent a few minutes on the phone with her son, a fourth grader named Carter.
Williams documented some of it and shared it with 11Alive News.
"Remember how smart you are. And remember your mom and dad adore you,” Biden is heard saying, under ambient jet engine noise, into a phone. Biden appeared to speak with Carter for more than three minutes.
Williams said Biden also told her 10-year-old that he ought to run for president some day. Carter is in school in Atlanta this week while his mom is in Chicago – where Biden is set to speak to a considerably larger audience.
"That's who Joe Biden is. Salt of the earth. He is the Uncle Joey B that we never knew we needed. And I can't wait to celebrate and honor him tonight on the convention stage," Williams said Monday morning.
