NEWNAN, Ga. — Rep. Drew Ferguson, who represents Georgia's 3rd District up and down west Georgia, announced Thursday he will not be running for reelection.
Rep. Ferguson is a four-term congressman and has served previously as the House Republican chief deputy whip. Georgia, he said in a statement, is "a truly special place, and it's calling us home."
The 57-year-old maintains his congressional office in Newnan - the sprawling 3rd District covers areas west of Atlanta, including Villa Rica and Carrollton, runs southwest to include cities such as Fayetteville and Peachtree City, extends south as far as Thomaston and goes southwest as far as LaGrange, West Point and the area north of Columbus.
"Upon the conclusion of the 118th Congress, I will be retiring from the House of Representatives. Serving the wonderful constituents of Georgia's Third District has been the honor of a lifetime," a statement said. "I have been blessed to have worked with such a talented and dedicated staff in my District and D.C. offices."
Ferguson last won reelection with nearly 70% of the vote in 2022, and his retirement is unlikely to open up an opportunity for Democrats to flip a seat in the solidly red district - he also won reelection with 65% in 2020 and 65.5% in 2018.
"Serving on the Ways and Means Committee has allowed me to focus on tax, trade and healthcare - issues important to American competitiveness on the global stage," the statement continued. "I've also been proud to advance policies addressing antimicrobial resistance and the battle we are facing with a mental health crisis. I was also honored to serve in House leadership as the Chief Deputy Whip."
The statement concluded: "Julie and I look forward to spending more time with our children and grandchildren while continuing to work to keep Georgia the best state in America to live and do business."
