'Hope is here' | Rockdale County makes history with all-women Board of Commissioners

Some residents hope the new board revokes BioLab's license.

CONYERS, Ga. — Rockdale County has sworn in its first-ever all-women Board of Commissioners, marking a historic moment as residents continue to demand action following September's BioLab fire and subsequent chemical plume.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Rockdale County auditorium on Sunday, with newly elected Chairwoman Janice Van Ness and Commissioner-elect Tuwanya Smith pledging to serve a county still grappling with frustration over the aftermath of the fire.

"Being the first female Chair of Rockdale County is an exciting opportunity," Van Ness said.

For residents like Niesha Veasley, the new leadership represents hope for change. Veasley criticized past officials for their lack of action.

"BioLab told us, basically, 'Whatever,'" Veasley said. "I really believe that the commissioners should listen to us. And there should be no BioLab."

The late September fire at BioLab, a chemical manufacturing facility, sparked widespread protests and calls for accountability. Commissioner-elect Smith acknowledged the community's concerns but emphasized that she is still getting up to speed and is focused on listening and learning.

"I'm in the same seat as the residents," Smith said. "I'm learning. I'm coming in. I don't know anything. I can't speak on that right now."

Van Ness echoed the need for trust and transparency as a top priority.

"I am coming in really assessing the information and getting my hands on all the information so that we can make the best decision," she said. "Certainly, as a community, we want a healthy, sustainable environment."

While both leaders stopped short of providing specifics on BioLab's future, Veasley said she remains cautiously optimistic.

"I'm excited about that," she said. "There are some on the board that I really feel that they're going to fight."

Smith emphasized that the new board symbolizes a fresh start for Rockdale County.

"There is hope," Smith said. "You have elected hope. Hope is on the way. Hope is here."

When asked about demands from protesters to revoke BioLab's license, Van Ness and Smith did not give a clear answer.

The ladies will join reelected Commissioner Doreen Williams. Their terms start Jan. 1.
