Chair of Georgia Democratic party says she continues to support Biden candidacy despite performance on Atlanta debate stage

U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams said she'd support his candidacy "as long as President Biden is at the top of this ticket."

ATLANTA — The Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia called President Joe Biden's performance in the Atlanta presidential debate "not a good night." However, U.S. Representative Nikema Williams said she would continue to support his re-election campaign.

"Right now, President Biden is the only person who can make the decision if he is going to remain in this race," Williams said. "As long as President Biden is at the top of this ticket, I am standing with my president because he has stood with the American people time and time again."

The comments came during a Wednesday interview taping for 11Alive's weekend politics show, The Georgia Vote, where the congresswoman acknowledged President Biden's politically damaging debate performance.

"We all saw the debate," she said. "It was not a good night and we were all concerned about what we saw on Thursday night."

Rep. Williams' statement came as the Biden re-election campaign was still grappling with the fallout from the debate. Some within the Democratic party have begun to question the viability of his continued candidacy. As of Thursday afternoon, two sitting Democratic congressmen had called on the president to withdraw from the race.

When asked at a briefing Wednesday if President Biden planned to step down, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, "Absolutely not."

Rep. Williams, in her interview for The Georgia Vote, touted what she described as President Biden's "three and a half years of accomplishments" and said his record in office outweighs concerns over his debate performance.

"My mission is clear," she said. "We must defeat Donald Trump."
