Georgia Rep. Rich McCormick on energy policy & its impacts on economy, national security

In a 1-1 interview with 11Alive, McCormick blamed "Bidenomics" for high gas prices. Says Trump policies will lower costs.

ATLANTA — In Roswell, Republican Representative Rich McCormick spent part of his day at BP on Holcomb Bridge Rd. pumping gas and talking to voters about what he says are Bidenomics' failures.

McCormick, who has endorsed Donald Trump for president, was elected in 2023 to represent Georgia's 6th congressional district in Washington. He is now vying to continue representing Georgia in Washington but in Georgia’s newly drawn 7th district.

In a 1-1 interview with 11Alive, Rep. McCormick emphasized the need for cheaper, efficient energy production to drive economic growth and reduce prices.

“Nothing drives business like energy. Energy, cheap energy, and the production of energy are what drive the economy. And when people don't have that, it affects everybody,” said McCormick. “Just getting to your job, actually, not being able to pay for groceries or pay for medications, those sorts of things matter to people. That's what we're trying to make people aware, that we can produce this energy cheaper and more efficiently than other countries, it would drive the prices down,” he continued.

When asked what policies former President Donald Trump’s administration would use to drive down the prices of goods, McCormick said taking the limits off of energy production and fracking would drive prices down.

“When you allow people to drill more and produce more without the regulatory burden, without resisting new drilling and more fracking and stuff like that. Actually, when you disallow that, that drives the prices up because it's limited energy production. When you drive the prices up, it has that cascade effect,” said McCormick.

According to Triple-A data, the average price of a gallon of regular gas in Georgia is $3.137, down from $3.607 a year ago.

When asked about Geoff Duncan’s DNC speech and his call for Republicans to “do the right thing” and vote for Kamala Harris, McCormick said Duncan hasn’t explained what the right thing is.

“When he talks about policy, what policies has he addressed? He's still talking about personality. He doesn't like Trump. Obviously, that's what he's basing this on. Okay, so is he pro choice? Is that his motive? Is he pro-government control? Is he pro-open border? Is he pro-crime? Is he pro-debt, or is he pro anti-educational opportunities? Is he pro-high gas prices? What is he for, that they represent, that he's saying you can still be a Republican and vote for them because every policy I see is against the conservative principles that I know,” said McCormick.
