Trump chooses former Georgia congressman to run Veterans Affairs

The Republican served in Congress from 2013 to 2021, and he helped defend Trump during his first impeachment process.

NEW YORK — Doug Collins, a former congressman from Georgia, is President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to run the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“We must take care of our brave men and women in uniform,” Trump said in a statement Thursday.

Collins is a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve Command. The Republican served in Congress from 2013 to 2021, and he helped defend Trump during his first impeachment process.

In a statement Thursday, where Trump announced his intent to nominate Collins, he expressed gratitude to the former congressman. 

"Thank you, Doug, for your willingness to serve our Country in this very important role," he wrote. 

After the announcement, Collins shared on X he would be honored to accept the nomination.

"Our heroes deserve the best care and support," he said. "We'll fight tirelessly to streamline and cut regulations in the VA, root out corruption, and ensure every veteran receives the benefits they've earned."
