Power restored after downtown transformer explosion

Thousands of people appeared to be without electricity after a transformer exploded in downtown Atlanta on Friday afternoon.

ATLANTA -- Thousands of people lost power for a time after a transformer exploded in downtown Atlanta on Friday afternoon.

Atlanta Fire confirmed the explosion happened at a Georgia Power transformer located at Northside Drive and Joseph E. Boone Boulevard.

There were no initial reports of injuries.

According to Georgia Power, more than 6,000 customers were left without power in the downtown area.

By 5:15 p.m., power had been restored to all customers, Georgia Power said.

In a statement to 11Alive News on April 5, a Georgia Power spokesperson said the source of the fire was an equipment malfunction that resulted in a localized fire.

The company said power was successfully restored to all the affected customers within 60 minutes.
